What I Learned Handling 200+ Rush Orders for Construction Specialties
You think you need it fast. But that's not the real problem.
Every week, I get calls from architects and contractors who search for "construction specialties" or "specialties in construction" and end up asking me for a miracle. I don't have hard data on industry-wide root causes, but based on my experience across 200+ orders, I'd say 80% of rush requests fall into one of these buckets:
1. You spec'd the wrong product
Someone chose a standard baseboard instead of a wall protection system. Or they ordered a grille that doesn't meet the building's wind load requirements. The spec was written by someone who searched "shower caps" (yes, that actually happened — a client confused a protective cap with a plumbing part) or "how to repair screen door" when they really needed a louver. The point is: the product was wrong from the start.
2. The timeline was unrealistic from the beginning
I've seen project schedules with three days between "order material" and "install." That's not a plan; that's a fantasy. Normal turnaround for a custom expansion joint is 10–14 business days. If you're giving yourself three, you're already in panic mode. Our data shows that rush orders cost an average of 35% more than standard ones — and that's if nothing goes wrong. 3. You thought "expedited shipping" would solve everything
Shipping is only part of the chain. A lot of people don't realize that even with overnight freight, the product still has to be fabricated. The true cost of waiting
