The Most Expensive Construction Specialties Are the Cheap Ones
I'll say it plainly: if you're buying construction specialties by unit price alone, you're probably overpaying. Not sometimes. Not “it depends.” Probably.
I'm the procurement manager at a 40-person building products fabrication company. I've managed our construction-specialties budget — about $180,000 annually — for six years, negotiated with dozens of vendors, and documented every order in our cost tracking system. This isn't a theory.

But the deeper fix wasn't more quotes. It was better questions. Is the price installed or materials only? What happens if dimensions change? Who owns the engineering review? Those questions are free. Ignoring them isn't.
Teach the client. It's cheaper.
I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining why one louver is not the same as another louver than deal with mismatched expectations after installation. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions.
When I explain the difference between a generic corner guard and one with an impact-resistant mounting system, clients stop asking for the lowest price. They start asking about lifecycle costs. That's progress.
When a manufacturer like Construction Specialties puts an independent test report in the submittal, that's not paperwork. That's evidence. Using it doesn't make you a pushover.
The real authority isn't a sales rep

For check valves, the plumbing code — typically the International Plumbing Code or Uniform Plumbing Code — defines where they're required. Those documents are your authority.
Hearsay and a glossy brochure won't help you when something fails. The code, the standard, and the written submittal will.
But saving money is still smart
Yes, I hear it: “You're a procurement manager. Shouldn't you be saving money?” Absolutely. I just don't count false savings as saving. For commodity items like standard steel angles or generic fasteners, buy on price. For construction specialties — or check valves, or anything that's hard to reach after installation — buy on evidence.
A valve stem is not a commodity if replacing it means shutting down a building. A check valve is not a commodity if it protects equipment that costs forty times more than the valve.
I still kick myself for the times I didn't document a vendor's verbal promise. If I'd gotten the delivery date in writing, we'd have had grounds to dispute a late fee. That mistake helped me build a cost calculator after getting burned on hidden fees twice.
So glad I double-checked quantities before approving that louver order. I was one click away from ordering ten times what we needed. Those near-misses stick with you.

Call it bias. Call it caution. In my opinion, the cheapest construction-specialties quote is usually a loan with interest. You pay the difference later, with worse terms — in callbacks, downtime, redo cost, and client trust.
If you ask me, an informed buyer is the best defense against a bad building product.
