The reversal: People think expensive products cost more because of materials. Actually, products from vendors with serious QC cost more because they check the finish before the item ships. The checking is what you're buying. I know that sounds obvious, but it took me years to understand.
A Black Front Door Is a Humility Lesson

- Keep the touch-up kit with the delivery, and verify the batch number matches the installed product.
- If the spec says 'accepted or equal,' verify the product line before you assume the equal has the same coating. A lot of 'or equal' substitutions aren't.
There's something satisfying about a shipment that comes off the truck looking exactly like the approved sample. No emails, no reorder, no site visit to talk about paint. The payoff is boring. Exactly what you want.
The Honest Limits of Field Repair
Not every chip needs a replacement. Some minor scuffs on louvers are not ideal, but workable—especially if they're hidden and primed. Field repair also works for some materials and not others. Powder-coated aluminum doesn't spot-fix well. Anodized finishes can't be touched up at all. Acrovyn with a colored wear layer is usually replace-in-place, not paint-and-pray. Know the substrate before you break out the brush.
The best repair is the one you prevent. Check the spec. Check the sample. Check the shipment. It costs almost nothing, and it saves a ton of money. That's not a slogan—it's the math. A five-minute check prevents a five-day fix.
