Three Mistakes I See Repeatedly
I review architectural specialty products before they ship. In a normal year, I sign off on maybe 200 items—maybe 180, I'd have to check the Q4 log. This checklist is what I actually use when a project calls for “Division 10” construction specialties: wall protection, expansion joints, louvers, sunshades, grilles, corner guards, kick plates, and the door hardware that goes with them. It's for architects, GCs, and facility managers who need to verify a submittal rather than guess.
Who This Checklist Is For
Use this when you're about to spec a product and you're not completely sure what to verify. I'll say it up front: this is not a design guide. It's a pre-purchase checklist. You can finish it in about ten minutes, and it should prevent most of the phone calls I get after a product fails.
Step 1: Verify Whose Product You're Actually Looking At
Construction specialties is both a category and a brand name. My company—Construction Specialties—makes Acrovyn wall protection and a broad range of Division 10 products. There are also regional companies like Carolina Specialties Construction and JP Construction Specialties. I'm not going to critique them; I just know that quotes and submittals sometimes get mixed up because the names look alike.
Before you confirm an order, ask these three things:
- What is the legal entity on the quote?
- Does the model number match the manufacturer's published documentation?
- Who's responsible if the product doesn't meet the specs?
If the answer to any of those is vague, slow down. A few minutes of checking here saves a much longer conversation later.
Step 2: Check Real Dimensions, Not Just the Drawing
In Q1 2024, we received a batch of louver frames where the depth was off by 3/16 inch. Our tolerance is 1/16 inch. The vendor said it was still “within industry standard.” We rejected the batch, and they had to redo it at their cost. Now every contract includes a dimension tolerance clause.
It's tempting to think that a product is either compliant or not. But in construction specialties, compliance is a range. The question is whether the range works for your installation. A louver might have great air-performance data in the lab, but if the frame is twisted, field performance will disappoint.
Check the submittal for published tolerances on each dimension. Then measure the sample. And if a product claims a performance rating, ask what test method was used. The difference between an AMCA-rated louver performance report and a marketing sheet is often just a line in the submittal.
Expansion joints are another place where tolerances show up. A cover rated for 2 inches of movement will fail if the blockout is too narrow. It sounds basic, but I see it more often than I'd like.
Step 3: Review the Hardware Package Before the Wall Is Closed
Pocket door hardware is a classic hidden problem. I'm not talking about residential closet doors. I'm talking about commercial openings where the track sits inside a partition. If the track isn't rated for the door weight, or the rough opening is out of square, the door will bind. And by the time you know, the wall is finished.
So put this in your RFI: What is the pocket door hardware manufacturer's required rough opening width, rough opening height, and wall thickness? Verify that the track is long enough for the full travel path. According to ADA.gov (as of January 2025), accessible door openings have specific requirements for clear width and maneuvering clearance. Those rules apply to sliding doors too, so don't assume a pocket door is automatically fine.
Door products are in our line, but pocket door hardware specifically is not something I claim to know inside out. I've approved it on projects, but I'd rather hand that spec to a hardware specialist than pretend I know every track profile.
Step 4: Treat Wall Protection Like a Screen Protector
It's an imperfect analogy, but I started using it after someone asked whether Acrovyn was like a Zagg screen protector for walls. No, it's a rigid panel, not a film. But the logic is the same: you put protection on before the damage appears, and it only works if it covers the right area and is installed correctly.
A corner guard at 36 inches high does nothing for a cart that hits at 48 inches. A screen protector that doesn't cover the glass still looks bad. So mark the impact zones on the drawings. Check the height, the adhesive, and the substrate condition. The best panel in the industry will fail if it's adhered to a dirty or uneven wall.
This is also the step where you decide whether you need Acrovyn, a stainless steel corner guard, or something that falls somewhere between the two. That decision should be based on traffic, cleaning chemicals, and impact patterns, not on what the rep showed you first.
Step 5: Plan for Cleaning and Maintenance from Day One
Every product I approve has a cleaning instruction. For Acrovyn wall panels, harsh solvents can ruin the surface. For louvers, the maintenance is about keeping drains and weep holes clear. If you don't know the right cleaning method, you'll eventually use the wrong cleaner and that will shorten the life of the product.
And yes, I get asked about shower heads too. Since people search “how to clean shower head vinegar” and land on construction-related sites: remove the shower head, soak it in white vinegar for 30 to 60 minutes, scrub the nozzles with a small brush, then rinse thoroughly. That's the non-plumber version. I'm not a plumber, so please verify before you take apart a fixture you own.
Three Mistakes I See Repeatedly
- Assuming all construction specialty suppliers have the same tolerances. They don't. Put the tolerance in the submittal and test the sample.
- Ordering pocket door hardware after the frame is installed. It might work, but “might” isn't a specification.
- Skipping the mockup to save money. We have a customer who orders 50,000 units a year and still asks for a sample every run. It catches at least one issue almost every time.
Looking back, I should have pushed for a mockup on a $22,000 redo in 2022. At the time, the schedule didn't seem to allow it. It allowed a $22,000 mistake instead. That's why this checklist exists.
If there's one thing I've learned in four years of reviewing products, it's to say what I can't verify. I can tell you about Acrovyn wall protection, expansion joint covers, louvers, and the tolerances we ship against. I can't tell you every pocket door track is good, and I can't give you a definitive cleaning recommendation for a product I don't make. That's not false modesty. It's how you avoid expensive surprises.
